Why large PDFs can slow down or exhaust browser memory

A 100 MB PDF can require far more than 100 MB of RAM because the browser may hold input bytes, parsed structures, decompressed fonts or images and output bytes at the same time. Merging increases memory use across all open inputs.

File size is not memory use

PDF streams often compress images and fonts. A library may decompress some data and create additional in-memory objects while reading or modifying pages. Saving also needs space for the output document.

The practical limit varies by browser, operating system, device and other open tabs. A phone or low-memory machine may reload the tab before a useful error can be shown.

Signs that you should reduce the workload

If the interface becomes unresponsive, the device runs hot, the tab reloads or processing stalls, do not keep repeating the same job. Close other tabs, split the work into smaller batches or use the desktop app.

  • Merge fewer files per batch.
  • Use a computer instead of a phone.
  • Keep enough disk space for the download.
  • Avoid opening several large PDFs at once.

When is Windows a better fit?

The Windows app is a better fit for offline work, repeated tasks and larger documents. A native engine can control resources more directly than a browser, but every operation still needs benchmarking; desktop does not mean unlimited.
