How to remove PDF metadata safely before sharing

Removing PDF metadata usually clears fields such as title, author, keywords, creator software and the XMP packet. It does not automatically remove names printed on pages, annotations, attachments, layers, app history or every forensic trace.

What metadata can a PDF contain?

A PDF may include a Document Info dictionary with title, author, subject, keywords, dates and creator software. Many applications also write XMP, a structured metadata packet used in publishing and asset workflows.

Information can also live in attachment names, comments, form fields, layers, embedded JavaScript, and the text or images visible on a page. A metadata button cannot replace a document review process.

A pre-sharing review

Work on a copy, remove basic metadata, and inspect the Properties panel in an independent PDF reader. Search again for names, email addresses, customer identifiers and internal information in page content, comments and attachments.

  • Keep the source in a controlled location.
  • Inspect Document Properties after processing.
  • Review annotations, attachments and form fields.
  • Do not edit a signed original when signature validity matters.

When do you need a specialist tool?

Legal, medical or financial workflows and forensic sanitization requirements need a verified redaction or sanitization product plus independent checks. The current VietPDF release clears basic metadata fields and does not promise complete anonymity.
